History 1910 - 1956
Dolgellau Golf Club opened on its current site in 1910/11. It was owned for much of its early history by the Vaughan family, who owned extensive property in the area. The Vaughans had a military history and also owned the convalescent centre at Nannau, near Llanfachreth. Soldiers recuperating from injuries sustained in the World Wars were regular visitors to the club. Although many members were and are Welsh-speaking and native to Dolgellau or the surrounding area, this set a broader context for membership from the off. General Vaughan agreed a long lease with the then members.
Our late President, Dafydd Jones Williams, former Chief Executive of Meirionydd Council and appointed Ombudsman for Wales , first joined in 1928. He remembered the early course as not too dissimilar to today's. He recalls that it was always a very friendly club, with everyone knowing everyone else. The wider Nannau estate was sold in 1956.
